Your travel eSIM checklist for Christmas, New Year and long weekends

· Telroo

Short answer: check your phone, destination coverage, data and validity before buying. Install on Wi-Fi before leaving Australia, then select the travel eSIM for mobile data when you arrive. A short holiday still needs the same checks as a longer summer trip.

If you know the destination, open the Bali & Indonesia eSIM, Japan eSIM or Thailand eSIM page while working through this list. Each has current plan choices and a purchase option.

1. Check the holiday dates against your actual itinerary

Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026, and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027. For example, Queensland also lists Monday 28 December 2026 as an additional Boxing Day public holiday. Check your own state or territory's dates and your work arrangements before planning time away.

Use the official Queensland public holiday calendar or your own government's calendar. For the eSIM, count the overseas arrival and departure days, including any stopover where you will use data. A public holiday calendar does not determine when your eSIM expires.

2. Check the exact phone and carrier lock

Use the eSIM compatibility checker for the model and country version you own. Do this for every traveller's phone, rather than assuming all phones in the same family support eSIM.

A carrier-locked phone may not accept another provider's eSIM. Check our Australian carrier unlocking guide early enough to resolve any restriction before departure.

3. Match the plan to every destination

A Bali plan covers Indonesia; it does not automatically cover a Singapore stopover. A Japan plan does not automatically cover South Korea. Open the coverage list on the product page and match it to your itinerary.

For one country, compare that country's plans. For several countries, compare the regional options in all destinations. Check listed networks where available, especially if your itinerary includes areas away from major towns. No plan should be treated as a guarantee of reception everywhere.

4. Choose data and enough validity

Fixed-data plans give a total allowance to use during the validity period. Daily plans have a daily high-speed allowance; read the product's speed and reset rules before choosing one.

For a three- or four-day escape, compare the available plans rather than assuming you need to buy one day at a time. For a longer Christmas holiday, cover the entire trip. Check whether shared hotspot use, uploads or video calls will increase your needs. Use the data planner to make your own estimate.

5. Buy with an email address you can access

Telroo sends the eSIM details after payment and supplier processing. Check the checkout email carefully and look in junk mail before contacting support. You do not need to create an account to buy.

Prices are shown in AUD including GST on the Australian store. Follow the product links for current prices instead of relying on an old article's price example. You can buy up to four eSIMs per order, but each eSIM is for its own device.

6. Install before departure, without starting the holiday allowance

Install on stable Wi-Fi at home. Telroo plan validity starts when you first use the eSIM in a covered destination, not when you install it. Label the new line and follow the delivery instructions.

Use the iPhone setup guide, Samsung setup guide or general installation guide. Install on the phone that will use the eSIM. Do not delete it to try again: each Telroo eSIM can only be installed once.

7. Set the Australian line and travel line separately

Select the travel eSIM for mobile data on arrival. Turn off data roaming on your Australian line, and disable automatic mobile-data switching where available. Turn on roaming for the travel eSIM if its instructions require it.

Keeping the Australian line active can let you receive texts, but your carrier's call and SMS charges still apply. Check your own plan. Our Australian number guide explains the distinction.

8. Save an offline fallback before leaving

Save your accommodation address, booking details and support information somewhere available without mobile data. Download the maps and tickets you need where the relevant apps allow it.

After landing, give the travel line time to connect. If needed, toggle Aeroplane Mode or restart the phone, then follow the troubleshooting guide. Contact Telroo support before deleting the eSIM.
