Will my phone work in Italy?
Your phone can use a travel eSIM in Italy if it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Check for an “Add eSIM” option or an EID in your phone settings. Your Australian SIM can stay in the phone: with dual SIM it may remain available for calls and texts (your own carrier’s roaming charges apply), while the travel eSIM is used for mobile data. Choosing a plan for Italy
Fixed-data plans (Italy eSIM) give one data allowance to use over the validity period; it does not reset each day. They suit travellers who mostly use maps, messaging and bookings.
Daily plans (Italy Unlimited eSIM) give a high-speed allowance each day for the number of days you choose. After the daily allowance is used, speed is reduced until the next day. They suit heavier daily use, such as video calls or sharing a hotspot.
Coverage in Italy
On 16 October 2026 the Italy plans listed three networks: TIM (5G), Iliad (5G) and Wind (5G). Coverage can drop in tunnels, mountain villages and on some coastal roads, so download offline maps for drives and train trips.
Italy plan or a Europe plan?
An Italy plan covers Italy only. If your trip continues to France, Greece, Switzerland or other countries, compare a regional plan in the Europe eSIM guide. On 16 October 2026 the Europe 40+ Areas eSIM listed Italy, France, Greece, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and more than 30 other destinations. Vatican City and San Marino were not named on that list. For a one-country trip, the Italy plan keeps things simple; for several countries, one regional plan avoids switching eSIMs at each border.
How much data do you need?
Start from your phone's recent mobile-data use at home, then add headroom for navigation and uploading photos. As a planning example, 20GB over 14 days is about 1.4GB a day; over 7 days it is about 2.9GB a day. Video streaming, video calls, cloud backups and hotspot use add up quickly, so save them for Wi-Fi or choose a larger or daily plan. The travel data planner has daily budgets for 7, 14 and 30 days.
Using your Australian number
These plans are data-only: they do not include a local phone number, standard calls or SMS. A dual-SIM phone can keep your Australian SIM installed for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries mobile data. Turn off data roaming on the Australian line if you want to avoid your carrier's roaming charges, and check your carrier's terms for incoming calls and texts.

Italy eSIM setup
- Confirm your exact phone model supports eSIM and the phone is carrier-unlocked (compatibility guide).
- Install the eSIM from the QR code in your delivery email while on reliable Wi-Fi, ideally before you fly.
- Label the new line “Italy” so it is easy to pick in your settings.
- On arrival, set the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line, turn on data roaming for that line, and follow the plan's activation instructions.

Can I use my phone as a hotspot in Italy?
The Italy plans listed hotspot support on 16 October 2026. Hotspot traffic uses the same data allowance; see sharing data with a hotspot.
Does an Italy eSIM include an Italian phone number?
No. The plans are data-only, with no local number, standard calls or SMS.
Will an Italy plan work in France or Switzerland?
No. A single-country plan works only in the country it lists. Choose a Europe plan that lists every country on your route.
