Short answer

Best fit by data per day for most Australians visiting India for 1–2 weeks: the 20GB, 30-day plan, $39.90 AUD — about 1.4GB a day over 14 days, sized for everyday maps, messaging, bookings and photo uploads. It is data-only: no local phone number, standard calls or SMS. For lighter use (mostly maps and messaging), the 5GB, 30-day plan is $11.90 AUD, about 0.36GB a day over 14 days. If you want a set amount every day, daily plans start at $7.90 AUD for 1GB a day for 3 days.

Will my phone work in India?

Your phone can use a travel eSIM in India if it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Check for an “Add eSIM” option or an EID in your phone settings. Your Australian SIM can stay in the phone: with dual SIM it may remain available for calls and texts (your own carrier’s roaming charges apply), while the travel eSIM is used for mobile data. Check your phone.

An India eSIM gives a compatible, unlocked phone prepaid mobile data for a family visit, a wedding trip or a tour, without swapping out your Australian SIM or buying a local SIM after a long flight.

Choosing a plan for India

Fixed-data plans (India eSIM) give one data allowance to use over the validity period; it does not reset each day. They suit travellers who mostly use maps, messaging and bookings.

Daily plans (India Unlimited eSIM) give a high-speed allowance each day for the number of days you choose. After the daily allowance is used, speed is reduced until the next day. They suit heavier daily use, such as video calls or sharing a hotspot.

Coverage in India

On 16 October 2026 the India plans listed two networks: Jio (5G) and Airtel (4G). Signal still depends on where you are: big cities, regional towns, hill stations and long train journeys can all differ, so download offline maps and tickets before you leave Wi-Fi.

Visiting Sri Lanka, Nepal or other countries too?

An India plan covers India only. For a multi-country trip in Asia, the Asia (20 areas) eSIM listed India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and other Asian destinations on 16 October 2026. Nepal was not on that list, so check every country on your route against the plan's coverage list before you buy.

How much data do you need?

Start from your phone's recent mobile-data use at home, then add headroom for navigation and uploading photos. As a planning example, 20GB over 14 days is about 1.4GB a day; over 7 days it is about 2.9GB a day. Video streaming, video calls, cloud backups and hotspot use add up quickly, so save them for Wi-Fi or choose a larger or daily plan. The travel data planner has daily budgets for 7, 14 and 30 days.

Using your Australian number

These plans are data-only: they do not include a local phone number, standard calls or SMS. A dual-SIM phone can keep your Australian SIM installed for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries mobile data. Turn off data roaming on the Australian line if you want to avoid your carrier's roaming charges, and check your carrier's terms for incoming calls and texts.

Messaging and calling apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime work over the travel eSIM's data. More on how this works: what an eSIM is and keeping your Australian number overseas.

If your bank or other services send one-time codes by SMS to your Australian number, keep that line switched on for texts and check your carrier's roaming terms before you travel.

India eSIM setup

  1. Confirm your exact phone model supports eSIM and the phone is carrier-unlocked (compatibility guide).
  2. Install the eSIM from the QR code in your delivery email while on reliable Wi-Fi, ideally before you fly.
  3. Label the new line “India” so it is easy to pick in your settings.
  4. On arrival, set the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line, turn on data roaming for that line, and follow the plan's activation instructions.

Step-by-step guides: iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and the general installation guide. If it does not connect, see troubleshooting before deleting anything. Payment, delivery and your order page are explained in how Telroo works; for the trip itself, see keeping your phone safe overseas and, once you are home, what to do with the eSIM after your trip.

India eSIM questions

Can I share data with family members in India?

The India plans listed hotspot support on 16 October 2026, so you can share your connection with another device. Everyone's use comes out of the same allowance, so a daily plan or a larger fixed plan suits sharing better.

Does an India eSIM give me an Indian phone number?

No. The plans are data-only, with no local number, standard calls or SMS. Services that need an Indian mobile number for sign-up or verification will not work with it.

When should I install it?

Install it in Australia on stable Wi-Fi, then switch to it on arrival following the plan's activation instructions.
