How to activate a travel eSIM on iPhone

Use this checklist to add a travel eSIM on a compatible, unlocked iPhone and select the correct line for mobile data after arrival.

On a compatible, unlocked iPhone, add the supplied plan in Settings, label it clearly and select it for mobile data when the plan instructions tell you to connect. Menu names can vary by iOS version and region.

Before installation

  • Open Settings > General > About and look for an EID.
  • In Settings > General > About, check Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” normally indicates an unlocked device.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi and keep the QR code open on another screen.

Add the eSIM

  1. Open Settings > Mobile or Cellular.
  2. Tap Add eSIM.
  3. Choose Use QR Code and scan the supplied code.
  4. Label the line with the destination name.
  5. Keep your Australian line as the default voice line if you still need calls or SMS, subject to your carrier’s charges.

Connect after landing

  1. Open Settings > Mobile or Cellular and turn on the travel eSIM.
  2. Tap Mobile Data or Cellular Data and select the travel eSIM.
  3. Open the travel eSIM line and enable Data Roaming only if the plan instructions require it.
  4. Turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching if you do not want the iPhone to use your Australian SIM for data.

If it does not connect

Toggle Aeroplane Mode, restart the iPhone and confirm the travel eSIM is selected for data. Then check the plan’s APN and network-selection instructions. Do not delete the eSIM unless support confirms it can be reinstalled.
