Using a travel eSIM on a cruise
A travel eSIM is for ports and shore days, not the open sea. Turn off roaming on your Australian SIM before you sail and check every port.
A cruise mixes days at sea with days in port, often in several countries. Your phone behaves differently in each, so it helps to know what a travel eSIM can and cannot do before you board.
Short answer
- In port and on shore: a travel eSIM gives you mobile data on the land networks listed for its countries, so it suits shore days for maps, bookings and messages.
- At sea: the networks on Telroo product pages are land mobile networks. None of them is a ship's onboard network, so plan on the ship's Wi-Fi at sea.
- Your Australian SIM: Telstra says that on some plans a phone can connect to a ship's satellite service at pay-as-you-go roaming rates. Turn off data roaming on your Australian line before you sail unless you have checked your carrier's cruise rates.
What Telstra says about phones at sea
Telstra's help page on roaming on a cruise (checked 17 October 2026) says that on its Upfront plans international roaming does not work at sea, and suggests using the ship's Wi-Fi instead. On other plans, such as Pre-Paid, it says the phone may connect to the ship's satellite service if the ship turns it on, charged at pay-as-you-go rates of $3 per MB, which Telstra describes as significantly more expensive than a Day Pass. Its suggested alternative is again the ship's Wi-Fi. Optus and Vodafone customers should check their own carrier's cruise or maritime roaming terms.
Set up your phone before you board
- Install the travel eSIM at home on your own Wi-Fi, from the QR code in your delivery email (installation guide).
- Turn off data roaming on your Australian line. Keep the line switched on if you want texts when you are in range of a land network, but stop it using data overseas (keeping your Australian number).
- Set the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for that line only.
- At sea, use the ship's Wi-Fi. If you want to be sure the phone uses no mobile service while sailing, switch on aeroplane mode and then turn Wi-Fi back on.
When does the plan's validity start?
Telroo product pages note that activation timing varies: some plans begin when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at the destination, others can begin at installation. On a cruise that can mean the plan starts at your first port. Once a plan has started, its validity runs in days, including days at sea, so choose a validity that covers the whole cruise from the first port you want data in, and read the selected plan's activation instructions before you buy.
Check every port against the coverage list
A cruise can call at countries that are easy to miss when you choose a plan. Some examples from the Telroo product pages on 17 October 2026:
- Mediterranean: the Europe 40+ Areas eSIM listed Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain and Turkey, among others, but not Monaco or Montenegro. See the Europe eSIM guide, or the single-country guides for France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain and Turkey.
- Southeast Asia: the Asia (7 areas) eSIM listed Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. See the Southeast Asia eSIM guide, or the single-country guides for Bali & Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
- South Pacific: Telroo had Fiji and Samoa plans, but no plans for New Caledonia or Vanuatu. If your cruise calls there, plan on Wi-Fi in those ports.
If a single port is the only gap, a regional plan for the rest of the route may still make sense. If you spend a few days in one country before or after the cruise, compare that country's own plan as well; each product page lists its networks under Plan details.
How much data for shore days?
Shore days are usually short and busy: maps, ride bookings, translation, messages and photo sharing. A fixed-data plan with a modest allowance often covers them, while video calls and uploading many photos are easier on the ship's or a café's Wi-Fi. The travel data planner helps you size the allowance.
Cruise eSIM questions
Will a travel eSIM work while the ship is at sea?
Do not count on it. The plans list land mobile networks, not ship networks, so use the ship's Wi-Fi at sea.
Can I still get texts on my Australian number?
Your Australian line can stay switched on for texts when it is in range of a land network, subject to your carrier's roaming terms. Data roaming on that line can stay off while the travel eSIM carries your data.
Does a travel eSIM include calls?
No. Telroo plans are data-only, with no local number, standard calls or SMS. Calling and messaging apps work over the eSIM's data.
