Will my phone work in Maldives?

Choosing a plan for Maldives
Fixed-data plans (Maldives eSIM) give one data allowance to use over the validity period; it does not reset each day. They suit travellers who mostly use maps, messaging and bookings.
Daily plans (Maldives Unlimited eSIM) give a high-speed allowance each day for the number of days you choose. After the daily allowance is used, speed is reduced until the next day. They suit heavier daily use, such as video calls or sharing a hotspot.
Coverage in the Maldives
On 17 October 2026 the Maldives plans listed one network: Dhiraagu (4G). The fixed-data plans listed top-ups; the daily plans did not. Signal can vary between islands and out on the water, so save your transfer details, resort contacts and offline maps before you leave Malé.
Resort islands and transfers
Smartraveller's Maldives travel advice (updated 11 June 2026, checked 17 October 2026) says travel between islands is by boat or plane, including seaplane. If your resort has Wi-Fi, a travel eSIM still covers the airport arrival, transfers and time away from the resort network. Smartraveller also says to check with your resort before flying a drone.
How much data do you need?
Start from your phone's recent mobile-data use at home, then add headroom for navigation and uploading photos. As a planning example, 20GB over 14 days is about 1.4GB a day; over 7 days it is about 2.9GB a day. Video streaming, video calls, cloud backups and hotspot use add up quickly, so save them for Wi-Fi or choose a larger or daily plan. The travel data planner has daily budgets for 7, 14 and 30 days.
Using your Australian number
These plans are data-only: they do not include a local phone number, standard calls or SMS. A dual-SIM phone can keep your Australian SIM installed for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries mobile data. Turn off data roaming on the Australian line if you want to avoid your carrier's roaming charges, and check your carrier's terms for incoming calls and texts.

Maldives eSIM setup
- Confirm your exact phone model supports eSIM and the phone is carrier-unlocked (compatibility guide).
- Install the eSIM from the QR code in your delivery email while on reliable Wi-Fi, ideally before you fly.
- Label the new line “Maldives” so it is easy to pick in your settings.
- On arrival, set the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line, turn on data roaming for that line, and follow the plan's activation instructions.
