Thailand eSIM for Australian travellers

For most Australians visiting Thailand, a good choice is a data-only plan that covers the whole trip, works on your exact unlocked phone and lets you keep your Australian SIM installed for calls and SMS. Choose a fixed-data plan if you can estimate total use, a daily-data plan if you want a set high-speed allowance each day, or a regional plan if Thailand is one stop on a wider South-East Asia trip.

• Thailand Travel eSIM (fixed data): one total allowance for the validity period, from 1GB for 7 days up to 50GB for 30 days. Listed networks are AIS 5G and DTAC 5G; hotspot is supported. Unused data does not reset each day.
• Thailand Unlimited eSIM (daily data): choose 1GB, 3GB, 5GB or 10GB of high-speed data per day for 1, 7 or 30 days. After the daily allowance, speed is reduced until the 24-hour reset. Choose enough days before you buy.

Start with your phone's recent mobile-data use, then think about what you will do away from hotel Wi-Fi: maps, ride-hailing and messaging use less than video calls, streaming, photo backups or sharing a hotspot with a laptop. Multiply a daily budget by your travel days and leave headroom.

These are arithmetic planning examples, not measured usage or a guarantee that a plan will be enough:

• 7 days: 0.5GB/day gives 3.5GB; 1GB/day gives 7GB.
• 10 days: 0.5GB/day gives 5GB; 1GB/day gives 10GB.
• 14 days: 0.5GB/day gives 7GB; 1.5GB/day gives 21GB.

If your estimate is close to a fixed-data allowance, the next size up may suit you. If your use varies a lot from day to day, a daily-data plan gives a predictable high-speed allowance each day, but unused daily data does not carry over.

A prepaid travel eSIM suits travellers who mainly need mobile internet and want to pick data for a specific trip. Your Australian carrier's roaming may suit you if you need its calls, SMS or other features, or if your plan already includes Thailand roaming.

Compare the full trip cost rather than a daily headline: check whether Thailand is included, what triggers a daily roaming charge, how many chargeable days your trip has, the data allowance and what happens after it is used. A data-only eSIM does not provide a Thai phone number or standard local calls and SMS; if you need those, compare a service that explicitly includes them.

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can keep your Australian line installed and select the Thailand eSIM for mobile data. The data-only eSIM does not receive calls or SMS sent to your Australian number; those still depend on your home line and carrier.

Turning off data roaming on the Australian line reduces the chance of roaming data charges but does not guarantee that calls, SMS or other activity will be free.
