Will my phone work in Malta?
Your phone can use a travel eSIM in Malta if it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Check for an “Add eSIM” option or an EID in your phone settings. Choosing a plan for Malta
Fixed-data plans (Malta eSIM) give one data allowance to use over the validity period; it does not reset each day. They suit travellers who mostly use maps, messaging and bookings.
Daily plans (Malta Unlimited eSIM) give a high-speed allowance each day for the number of days you choose. After the daily allowance is used, speed is reduced until the next day. They suit heavier daily use, such as video calls or sharing a hotspot.
Coverage in Malta
On 17 October 2026 the Malta plans listed two networks: Vodafone (5G) and GO (5G). The fixed-data plans listed top-ups; the daily plans did not. Signal can be weaker on ferry crossings and inside old stone buildings, so download offline maps and save bookings before you set out.
Getting around Malta and Gozo
Smartraveller's Malta travel advice (updated 7 October 2026, checked 17 October 2026) says the Tallinja smartphone app shows bus timetables and routes with GPS tracking, and that ferries connect Cirkewwa with Gozo, and Valletta with Sliema and Cospicua. Both work best with mobile data, so install the eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land.
Malta plan or a Europe plan?

How much data do you need?
Start from your phone's recent mobile-data use at home, then add headroom for navigation and uploading photos. As a planning example, 20GB over 14 days is about 1.4GB a day; over 7 days it is about 2.9GB a day. Video streaming, video calls, cloud backups and hotspot use add up quickly, so save them for Wi-Fi or choose a larger or daily plan. The travel data planner has daily budgets for 7, 14 and 30 days.
Using your Australian number
These plans are data-only: they do not include a local phone number, standard calls or SMS. A dual-SIM phone can keep your Australian SIM installed for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries mobile data. Turn off data roaming on the Australian line if you want to avoid your carrier's roaming charges, and check your carrier's terms for incoming calls and texts.

Malta eSIM setup
- Confirm your exact phone model supports eSIM and the phone is carrier-unlocked (compatibility guide).
- Install the eSIM from the QR code in your delivery email while on reliable Wi-Fi, ideally before you fly.
- Label the new line “Malta” so it is easy to pick in your settings.
- On arrival, set the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line, turn on data roaming for that line, and follow the plan's activation instructions.

Does a Malta eSIM include calls or SMS?
