Short answer

Best fit by data per day for most Australians visiting New Zealand for 1–2 weeks: the 20GB, 30-day plan, $30.90 AUD — about 1.4GB a day over 14 days, sized for everyday maps, messaging, bookings and photo uploads. It is data-only: no local phone number, standard calls or SMS. For lighter use (mostly maps and messaging), the 5GB, 30-day plan is $9.90 AUD, about 0.36GB a day over 14 days. If you want a set amount every day, daily plans start at $5.90 AUD for 1GB a day for 3 days.

Will my phone work in New Zealand?

Your phone can use a travel eSIM in New Zealand if it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Check for an “Add eSIM” option or an EID in your phone settings. Your Australian SIM can stay in the phone: with dual SIM it may remain available for calls and texts (your own carrier’s roaming charges apply), while the travel eSIM is used for mobile data. Check your phone.

A New Zealand eSIM gives a compatible, unlocked phone prepaid mobile data without swapping out your Australian SIM. It suits a short city break or a longer road trip across both islands.

Choosing a plan for New Zealand

Fixed-data plans (New Zealand eSIM) give one data allowance to use over the validity period; it does not reset each day. They suit travellers who mostly use maps, messaging and bookings.

Daily plans (New Zealand Unlimited eSIM) give a high-speed allowance each day for the number of days you choose. After the daily allowance is used, speed is reduced until the next day. They suit heavier daily use, such as video calls or sharing a hotspot.

Coverage in New Zealand

On 16 October 2026 the New Zealand plans listed the One NZ network (5G). Coverage depends on where you are: cities and main highways can differ from alpine passes, national parks and remote coastlines. If you plan long drives, download offline maps before you leave Wi-Fi.

Staying for months? A 180-day plan was available on 17 October 2026, and this guide to longer stays explains when a local plan suits better.

How much data do you need?

Start from your phone's recent mobile-data use at home, then add headroom for navigation and uploading photos. As a planning example, 20GB over 14 days is about 1.4GB a day; over 7 days it is about 2.9GB a day. Video streaming, video calls, cloud backups and hotspot use add up quickly, so save them for Wi-Fi or choose a larger or daily plan. The travel data planner has daily budgets for 7, 14 and 30 days.

Using your Australian number

These plans are data-only: they do not include a local phone number, standard calls or SMS. A dual-SIM phone can keep your Australian SIM installed for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries mobile data. Turn off data roaming on the Australian line if you want to avoid your carrier's roaming charges, and check your carrier's terms for incoming calls and texts.

Messaging and calling apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime work over the travel eSIM's data. More on how this works: what an eSIM is and keeping your Australian number overseas.

New Zealand eSIM setup

  1. Confirm your exact phone model supports eSIM and the phone is carrier-unlocked (compatibility guide).
  2. Install the eSIM from the QR code in your delivery email while on reliable Wi-Fi, ideally before you fly.
  3. Label the new line “New Zealand” so it is easy to pick in your settings.
  4. On arrival, set the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line, turn on data roaming for that line, and follow the plan's activation instructions.

Step-by-step guides: iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and the general installation guide. If it does not connect, see troubleshooting before deleting anything. Payment, delivery and your order page are explained in how Telroo works; for the trip itself, see keeping your phone safe overseas and, once you are home, what to do with the eSIM after your trip.

New Zealand eSIM questions

Can I use my phone as a hotspot in New Zealand?

The New Zealand plans listed hotspot support on 16 October 2026. Hotspot traffic uses the same data allowance; see sharing data with a hotspot.

Does a New Zealand eSIM include calls or SMS?

No. The plans are data-only. Use internet calling and messaging apps, or keep your Australian SIM on for calls and texts.

When should I install it?

Install it before you fly while you have stable Wi-Fi, but follow the plan instructions for when to switch it on, because some plans start their validity when they first connect.
