Family holiday eSIMs: getting ready for summer, Christmas and New Year

· Telroo

Short answer: give each person who will head out separately their own travel eSIM. A child's tablet that stays with a parent can use that parent's hotspot instead. For the 2026–27 summer holidays, check every phone before buying and install each eSIM on the device that will use it.

For a Christmas break in Bali, start with the Bali & Indonesia eSIM. For a Japan winter trip, compare the Japan eSIM; for Fiji, compare the Fiji eSIM. Each link opens the product page to compare data, validity and current prices.

Plan around your own school's dates

There is no single Australian school holiday start date. Queensland state school summer holidays run from 12 December 2026 to 26 January 2027. NSW public school summer holidays begin 18 December 2026, ending 27 January 2027 in the eastern division and 3 February 2027 in the western division.

These dates come from the Queensland school calendar and NSW school holiday calendar. Check your own school's calendar, especially for independent schools and local exceptions. Choose eSIM validity for the dates you will actually be overseas, rather than the length of the school break.

Who needs an eSIM, and who can share?

Traveller or device Practical choice
Adults who sometimes go out separately A separate eSIM for each phone, so both can use maps and messaging.
A teenager visiting places without a parent Their own eSIM, if the phone supports it, plus an agreed way to check in.
A child's tablet that stays with a parent A parent's hotspot may be enough; a Wi-Fi-only tablet cannot install an eSIM.
Everyone together for a short break Sharing can work if the plan allows hotspot and you accept depending on one phone.

The Bali, Japan and Fiji plans linked above list hotspot sharing as allowed. Everyone connected to that hotspot uses the same data allowance and needs to stay within range. If the parent takes that phone elsewhere, the other devices lose the shared connection. Read the hotspot guide before relying on it for the whole family.

Choose data for the person running the hotspot

A family's shared allowance needs to cover all the connected devices. Check recent mobile-data use on each device, allow for uploads and video calls, and download entertainment on Wi-Fi before leaving.

For a long weekend, compare the available short-validity options. For two or three weeks over Christmas and New Year, check both the data allowance and the full validity period. The travel data planner helps estimate usage; it is not a promise that one allowance will fit every family.

Buy and assign each eSIM before installing

One Telroo order can contain up to four eSIMs, each with its own QR code. A larger family needs more than one order. Decide which eSIM belongs to which person before installation.

  1. Check each exact model with the phone compatibility guide, including older phones passed down to children.
  2. Check the phone is unlocked for another provider.
  3. Install each eSIM on its intended phone using Wi-Fi. Each Telroo eSIM can only be installed once; do not install them all on a parent's phone to move later.
  4. Label the lines clearly and keep the QR codes private.
  5. Save accommodation details and a meeting place offline in case someone loses their phone or connection.

Telroo plan validity starts when you first use the eSIM in a covered destination, not when you install it. Follow the installation guide before departure.

Keep Australian numbers without using them for travel data

Select the travel eSIM for mobile data. If keeping an Australian line on for texts, turn off its data roaming and automatic mobile-data switching where available. Calls and texts on that line remain subject to the Australian carrier's charges; these settings do not make every roaming service free.

See keeping your Australian number overseas for the detailed settings. Telroo eSIMs provide data, not a new local phone number or standard calls and SMS.

Choose the family's destination plans

Compare Bali & Indonesia plans, Japan plans or Fiji plans. Check each person's phone and allowance before adding their eSIM to the cart.
