- When the plan starts. Your plan's validity starts when you first use it in a covered destination, not when you install it. Install on Wi-Fi before you fly.
- On arrival. Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM and choose it for mobile data.
- Price. AUD, including GST, paid once by card through Stripe. Not a subscription.
- Delivery. QR code by email after payment, with install steps.
- Refunds. For a change of mind, request a refund if the eSIM has not been installed. Refund policy.
Coverage in Japan
Coverage depends on the network used by the selected plan and your location. Cities and major transport routes may differ from mountain, island or rural areas. The product description and selected plan are the authoritative sources for supported networks, speed rules and any fair-use limits. This guide is not a Telroo field test of reception or speed.
Will my phone work in Japan?
Your phone can use a travel eSIM in Japan if it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Check for an “Add eSIM” option or an EID in your phone settings. Your Australian SIM can stay in the phone: with dual SIM it may remain available for calls and texts (your own carrier’s roaming charges apply), while the travel eSIM is used for mobile data. Check phone compatibility.
Japan eSIM questions
Should I install the eSIM before flying?
Your plan's validity starts when you first use it in a covered destination, not when you install it. Install on Wi-Fi before you fly.
Does a Japan eSIM include calls or an Australian number?
No. The plans are data-only, with no local number, standard calls or SMS. Internet calling and messaging apps use the plan's data allowance.
Can I share data with my laptop?
Every Japan plan listed hotspot support on 17 October 2026. Hotspot traffic uses the same data allowance, so budget more if you share it; see sharing data with a hotspot.
What if the Japan eSIM does not connect?
Check the travel-data line and the plan's roaming, APN and activation settings. Follow the troubleshooting guide before deleting the profile. Read the Refund Policy for the applicable process.
Short answer: sizing a plan for 1–2 weeks
Best fit by data per day for most Australians visiting Japan for 1–2 weeks: the 20GB, 30-day plan, $18.90 AUD — about 1.4GB a day over 14 days, sized for everyday maps, messaging, bookings and photo uploads. It is data-only: no local phone number, standard calls or SMS. For lighter use (mostly maps and messaging), the 5GB, 30-day plan is $6.90 AUD, about 0.36GB a day over 14 days. If you want a set amount every day, daily plans start at $15.90 AUD for 1GB a day for 7 days.
| Plan | Price | Data per day | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1GB · 7 days | $1.90 AUD | About 0.14GB over 7 days | Short trips, or messaging and maps only |
| 3GB · 15 days | $3.90 AUD | About 0.21GB over 14 days | Short trips, or messaging and maps only |
| 5GB · 30 days | $6.90 AUD | About 0.36GB over 14 days | Light use: maps, messaging and bookings |
| 20GB · 30 days | $18.90 AUD | About 1.4GB over 14 days | Everyday use, including photo uploads and social media |
| 50GB · 30 days | $38.90 AUD | About 3.6GB over 14 days | Heavy use: video calls, streaming or sharing a hotspot |
| 1GB/day · 7 days | $15.90 AUD | 1GB high-speed | A set high-speed allowance every day; speed is reduced after it is used |
| 1GB/day · 15 days | $33.90 AUD | 1GB high-speed | A set high-speed allowance every day; speed is reduced after it is used |
| 1GB/day · 30 days | $67.90 AUD | 1GB high-speed | A set high-speed allowance every day; speed is reduced after it is used |
Data per day is the plan’s data divided by the trip length (up to 14 days): a planning average, not a daily allowance or a guarantee it will cover your use.
How to choose a Japan eSIM for your trip
A Japan eSIM gives a compatible, unlocked phone prepaid mobile data without replacing your Australian SIM. Choose the allowance and validity for your itinerary, then check activation, hotspot and speed terms for the selected plan before paying.
- Allowance: distinguish a total-data package from a daily high-data plan. For a daily plan, read the daily high-speed allowance, fair-use rules and what happens after the allowance is used.
- Validity: choose enough days for the whole itinerary, including arrival and departure. Your plan's validity starts when you first use it in a covered destination, not when you install it. Install on Wi-Fi before you fly.
- Coverage and sharing: confirm included areas, listed networks and hotspot support in the product details. Do not assume every plan provides the same network, speed or sharing allowance.
How much data do you need for 7, 14 or 21 days in Japan?
Check your phone's recent mobile-data use and decide what you expect to do on mobile data rather than Wi-Fi. Streaming, video calls, photo backups and hotspot use can change your budget. Multiply your chosen daily GB budget by the number of travel days, then leave headroom for your own needs.
These arithmetic examples are planning assumptions, not measured usage or a guarantee that a particular package will be enough:
- 7 days: 0.5GB/day gives 3.5GB; 1GB/day gives 7GB.
- 14 days: 0.5GB/day gives 7GB; 1GB/day gives 14GB.
- 21 days: 0.5GB/day gives 10.5GB; 1GB/day gives 21GB.
Compare the result with the current Japan plans and their validity. A total allowance does not reset daily. If your itinerary continues outside Japan, compare the Asia eSIM range and check the included-country list for every stop.
Japan travel eSIM or Australian roaming?
A prepaid travel eSIM can suit someone who mainly needs mobile internet and wants to select data for a particular trip. Home-carrier roaming may suit someone who needs the features of their Australian service or already has an eligible roaming inclusion.
Compare the full trip cost, not just a daily headline price: check whether Japan is included, which activities trigger a roaming fee, the number of chargeable days, allowances and charges after the allowance. If you need a Japanese number or standard local calls and SMS, compare a service that explicitly includes them. A data-only plan does not supply those features.
Using your Australian number in Japan
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can keep your Australian line installed while selecting the travel eSIM for mobile data. A data-only travel eSIM does not receive standard calls or SMS sent to your Australian number; those still depend on your home line and carrier.
Turning off data roaming on the Australian line does not guarantee that all roaming charges are avoided. Check calls, SMS, Wi-Fi calling and verification-code availability with your carrier before travel. Use the iPhone setup guide or Samsung setup guide to help distinguish the two lines.
Japan eSIM setup
- Check the exact phone model and sales region in the eSIM compatibility guide, and confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked.
- Your plan's validity starts when you first use it in a covered destination, not when you install it. Install on Wi-Fi before you fly.
- Install on reliable Wi-Fi before you fly. Label the new line “Japan” so it is easy to identify.
- Follow the plan's mobile-data, roaming and APN instructions. See how to install a travel eSIM for the general process.
