Spain eSIM for Australian travellers

A Spain eSIM gives a compatible, unlocked phone prepaid mobile data for cities, coast and islands, set up before you fly.

Choose your Spain eSIM

Select a product, then choose its data allowance and validity. Check whether the allowance is total or daily and read any speed conditions.

Check coverage, activation timing, hotspot rules and the final price on the selected product before paying. These travel eSIMs are data-only, with no local phone number, standard calls or SMS.

Coverage in Spain

On 16 October 2026 the Spain plans listed two networks: Orange (5G) and Movistar (5G). Signal can vary in mountain areas and on long rural drives, so download offline maps before you leave Wi-Fi.

Andorra, Gibraltar and Portugal

A Spain plan lists Spain only. On 16 October 2026:

  • Gibraltar and Portugal were both listed on the Europe 40+ Areas eSIM, together with Spain.
  • Andorra was not on the Spain or Europe 40+ Areas lists; it has a separate Andorra eSIM.

For trips across several countries, see the Europe eSIM guide.

Will my phone work in Spain?

Your phone can use a travel eSIM in Spain if it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Check for an “Add eSIM” option or an EID in your phone settings. Your Australian SIM can stay in the phone: with dual SIM it may remain available for calls and texts (your own carrier’s roaming charges apply), while the travel eSIM is used for mobile data. Check phone compatibility.

Spain eSIM questions

Can I use my phone as a hotspot in Spain?

The Spain plans listed hotspot support on 16 October 2026. Hotspot traffic uses the same data allowance; see sharing data with a hotspot.

Why does a website think I am in France or the Netherlands?

On 16 October 2026 the Spain plans listed France or the Netherlands as the data exit country. Some websites estimate your location from that. Read what a data exit country means.

Does a Spain eSIM include a Spanish phone number?

No. The plans are data-only, with no local number, standard calls or SMS.

Short answer: sizing a plan for 1–2 weeks

Best fit by data per day for most Australians visiting Spain for 1–2 weeks: the 20GB, 30-day plan, $18.90 AUD — about 1.4GB a day over 14 days, sized for everyday maps, messaging, bookings and photo uploads. It is data-only: no local phone number, standard calls or SMS. For lighter use (mostly maps and messaging), the 5GB, 30-day plan is $5.90 AUD, about 0.36GB a day over 14 days. If you want a set amount every day, daily plans start at $3.90 AUD for 1GB a day for 3 days.

5GB · 30 days $5.90 AUD About 0.36GB over 14 days Light use: maps, messaging and bookings
20GB · 30 days $18.90 AUD About 1.4GB over 14 days Everyday use, including photo uploads and social media
50GB · 30 days $38.90 AUD About 3.6GB over 14 days Heavy use: video calls, streaming or sharing a hotspot
1GB/day · 3 days $3.90 AUD 1GB high-speed A set high-speed allowance every day; speed is reduced after it is used
1GB/day · 7 days $8.90 AUD 1GB high-speed A set high-speed allowance every day; speed is reduced after it is used

Data per day is the plan’s data divided by the trip length (up to 14 days): a planning average, not a daily allowance or a guarantee it will cover your use.

Choosing a plan for Spain

A Spain eSIM gives a compatible, unlocked phone prepaid mobile data for Barcelona, Madrid, Andalusia and the islands, without swapping out your Australian SIM.

Fixed-data plans (Spain eSIM) give one data allowance to use over the validity period; it does not reset each day. They suit travellers who mostly use maps, messaging and bookings.

Daily plans (Spain Unlimited eSIM) give a high-speed allowance each day for the number of days you choose. After the daily allowance is used, speed is reduced until the next day. They suit heavier daily use, such as video calls or sharing a hotspot.

How much data do you need?

Start from your phone's recent mobile-data use at home, then add headroom for navigation and uploading photos. As a planning example, 20GB over 14 days is about 1.4GB a day; over 7 days it is about 2.9GB a day. Video streaming, video calls, cloud backups and hotspot use add up quickly, so save them for Wi-Fi or choose a larger or daily plan. The travel data planner has daily budgets for 7, 14 and 30 days.

Using your Australian number

These plans are data-only: they do not include a local phone number, standard calls or SMS. A dual-SIM phone can keep your Australian SIM installed for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries mobile data. Turn off data roaming on the Australian line if you want to avoid your carrier's roaming charges, and check your carrier's terms for incoming calls and texts.

Messaging and calling apps such as WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime work over the travel eSIM's data. More on how this works: what an eSIM is and keeping your Australian number overseas.

Spain eSIM setup

  1. Confirm your exact phone model supports eSIM and the phone is carrier-unlocked (compatibility guide).
  2. Your plan's validity starts when you first use it in a covered destination, not when you install it. Install on Wi-Fi before you fly. Use the QR code in your delivery email.
  3. Label the new line “Spain” so it is easy to pick in your settings.
  4. On arrival, set the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line, turn on data roaming for that line, and follow the plan's activation instructions.

Step-by-step guides: iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel and the general installation guide. If it does not connect, see troubleshooting before deleting anything. Payment, delivery and your order page are explained in how Telroo works; for the trip itself, see keeping your phone safe overseas and, once you are home, what to do with the eSIM after your trip.
